Bugattis were featured at 2013 Classic Days Schloss Dyck

The Classic Days Schloss Dyck 2013 was held 2-4 August on the grounds of Schloss Dyck Castle in the Rhine district of Neuss, Germany. The 8th annual motor festival offered spectators the opportunity to marvel in both the sights and sounds of classic automobiles set against the verdant backdrop of the moated 17th century castle.

Ex-works Bugatti Type 54 raced at Monza in 1931 at the hands of the great Achille Varzi. Chassis 54201 is one of four surviving cars from the nine built in 1931-1932.

This year’s Classic Days Schloss Dyck consisted of Racing Legends, where participants challenged a nearly three kilometer circuit, and Jewels in the Park, a FIVA category Concours d’Elegance that presented collector vehicles from all over the world. This year’s Concours featured a special 115 Years of Erdmann and Rossi exhibition with automobiles designed and built by the famed coachbuilder from Berlin. Additionally, the meeting at the Miscanthus Field – named after the tall Chinese reed grass that grows there – saw over a hundred classic car clubs exhibiting their gems.

Automotive highlights included a wonderful selection of Bugatti Grand Prix era machines, headlined by the Bugatti Type 54 raced by Achille Varzi at Monza in 1931 and the decidedly anti-aerodynamic 1923 Bugatti T32 Tank that was only entered in a single race. Other notable and interesting entrants included the 1922 Mercedes-Benz 28/95 Targa Florio; 1923 Alfa Romeo RLS; 1916 Locomobile M48 Speed Car; 1952 Ferrari 212/225S Tuboscocca Berlinetta with coachwork by Vignale; 1938 Lancia Aprilia Barchetta Touring Superleggera; 1947 Volkhart Sagitta V2 Coupe; 1927 Bentley 8-Litre Limousine with coachwork by H.J. Mulliner; 1938 Porsche VW38 Prototyp; 1950 Delahaye 135M Cabriolet Chapron ‘Mylord’; 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Pinin Farina Cabriolet; 1937 Horch 853 Sport Cabriolet coachwork by Voll and Ruhrbeck and the special exhibition of Erdmann and Rossi-bodied entrants. Official sponsor Mercedes-Benz brought cars that plotted the history of the S-Class and highlighted its racing successes.

1923 Bugatti T32 Tank was only entered in a single race, the 1923 Grand Prix at Lyon. The race car marked Ettore Bugatti’s attempt to create an extremely aerodynamic body. But aerodynamics studies still had a long way to go back then – the car handled poorly, which is why it was never entered in another race.
