Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - Dream Status: 1992 Ferrari F40 LM Street Conversion - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

Dream Status: 1992 Ferrari F40 LM Street Conversion

This 1992 F40 is a US market car that’s been converted to LM spec including carbon fiber front and rear shells, doors, aero, upgraded engine internals and more. Claimed to be accident free with 11k miles from new, the car looks utterly fantastic and we love that the seller encourages its use as a daily driver, though contrary to their claims we’ve never heard of the standard Federalized version being anything short of revelatory to drive.

Deep radiator exhaust vents, low, centrally placed NACA duct and fixed, Lexan-covered headlights distinguish the front bonnet from the standard car’s, while other changes include a lacquered carbon front splitter and cabin-adjustable carbon plane rear wing. We hope some sort of accommodation for driveways and mild ramps is included, as higher-sitting, normal spec F40′s struggle with these things even when fitted with hydraulic suspension lifts. Paint is fresh, and the seller claims only test miles have been added since recent completion.

Dream Status: 1992 Ferrari F40 LM Street Conversion

The interior is also described as new, and counter to what would be expected is actually somewhat better finished than in the standard car, with short black felt covering much of the normally exposed aluminum floor panels and the caulk-like, green adhesive haphazardly applied along their seams. Aggressively bolstered, Kevlar shelled Momo seats with Sabelt harnesses look like serious business, while sliding plastic windows and simple cloth pull straps continue the hardcore theme.

Dream Status: 1992 Ferrari F40 LM Street Conversion

Originally developed on behalf of Maranello by Michelotto of Padova, Le Mans spec cars featured a stronger chassis, uprated suspension, brakes, gearbox, wider wheels and more. Less than 20 were made, and with power increased from about 480 in street trim to nearly 800 were capable of otherworldly performance. The seller doesn’t specify exactly what engine work has been done beyond fitting of “LM internals”, adding that brakes and suspension have also been upgraded. Disappointingly, the ad’s embedded video is only a short walk around and doesn’t include audio of the Tubi exhaust in action.

Dream Status: 1992 Ferrari F40 LM Street Conversion

There’s no word if factory components are also included, and it could be reasonably argued that modifying a car as limited in supply and as special as an F40 isn’t a good idea. Originality and potential long term values aside, though, we love it, and wish we had the resources to test its daily drivability as suggested.

Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - Own one of the rarest modern production Ferraris - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

Much attention has been paid to the unique cars of Ferrari’s Special Projects division in recent times, but here’s a chance to own one of the rarest modern Ferraris for a far smaller outlay…

Built to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Pininfarina design house, the Ferrari 599 S.A. Aperta (named to honour company patriarchs Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina) was limited to 80 examples, all of which were already sold ahead of its official debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Exclusivity wasn’t its only draw (although it did make it the most exclusive production Ferrari at the time): the Special Projects division also equipped it with the 599 GTO’s more powerful V12, a lower-slung windscreen and an occasional soft-top, much like a Porsche Speedster.

When exclusivity isn't enough...

In the case of this particular car, Ferrari SP also applied Special Order 'Nuovo Rosso F1' paint and a bespoke leather trim, complemented by a matching luggage set. The car is currently on sale through UK-based Classic Driver dealer Tom Hartley Jnr. – the price might be ‘on request’ only, but it’s sure to be a lot less than the €3m or so you’d be charged for a one-off (even if you were to meet the strict approval criteria).

Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - Ferrari 458 Italia crashed on a wet German road - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

Ferrari 458 Italia crashed on a wet German road

A white Ferrari 458 Italia has been heavily crashed near the city of Brockhagen, Germany.
The driver reportedly lost control of the potent Italian supercar on a wet road after overtaking a slow running vehicle. The car then span several times before ending on a filed with the wheels facing the sky.

Luckily, no one got hurt during this accident with the driver escaping without a single scratch. However, the car could be a total loss.

Our source says the 458 Italia was actually taken from a Ferrari dealership in Hannover for a test drive.

Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - Ripley's Wooden Ferrari Looks Like A Car, Rides Like A Boat - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

David Moye
One of the world's strangest boats just made a big splash in San Diego: A replica of a Ferrari F50 made completely out of pine.

David Moye

The Ferrari was built in 2001 by Livio De Marchi, an artist living in the canal-covered city of Venice Italy.

David Moye

"[De Marchi] always wanted a Ferrari and this was the only way he could have one and still get around Venice," Terry Brennan, curator of the San Diego Air & Space Museum, told The Huffington Post.

David Moye

The boat has been owned by Ripley's Believe It Or Not! since 2009, but has been housed at the Museum for nearly two years as part of a traveling exhibition.

Fiona Lueng

But what fun is a Ferrari boat that is just dry docked? Not much. Ripley's decided to get it in the water for the first time since Carnaval was held in Venice in 2002 as part of the San Diego Bayfair, held this past weekend.

Ripleys.com

Getting the boat ready after 12 years out of the briny blue wasn't easy, according to Brennan.

Ripleys.com

"It had dried up quite a bit over the period of time it was out of the water," he said. "We thought we'd be able to season the hull like you would any wooden boat, but we found some cracks that were as much as half-an-inch wide. We had to recaulk a lot of the bottom.."

Ripleys.com
The maiden voyage took place early Saturday morning with HuffPost Weird News staff writer David Moye as the first passenger. Ripley's Vice President Patrick Hartle admitted earlier he wasn't sure how that ride would be. "I hope it goes better than the 3-hour tour on 'Gilligan's Isle,'" he said.

Ripleys.com
Here's the bottom line: There are few things cooler than getting into a boat that looks like a sportscar and there are few things slower. "Yeah, it doesn't match the performance of a real Ferrari," Hartle admitted.

Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - CARS 17 Glorious Minutes Of The Ferrari F40 - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

Cars these days are safe. They can still be very fast, but they’re also constrained by stringent crash regulations and emissions regulations and pedestrian safety standards. In the late ’80s and early ’90s,most of those restrictions weren’t in place. That’s why the world was blessed with vehicles like the Ferrari F40.

The Ferrari F40 was made between 1987 and 1992, and a total of 1315 cars were produced. It’s not atraditional Ferrari — instead of a stonking great naturally aspirated V12 at the back, the car had a small-capacity and highly twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V8. Based on the 288 GTO Evoluzione built for all-out Group B racing, the F40 was the last Ferrari built before serious motoring regulations started being implemented around the world, and holds more boyhood hearts than its more moderate and less rawF50 descendent. (By the way, if you feel like comparing the two, check out /DRIVE’s take on the matter.)

Take the next 17 minutes out of your work day. Sit back, relax, and enjoy. XCAR’s beautifully recorded tribute to the F40, coming to us via our mates at Jalopnik, is worth your time. It features long-time F40 racer and technical expert John Pogson talking about the history of the car, the history of Ferrari at the time, and the ethos behind such an incredible road-going vehicle.

On second thoughts, take half an hour instead, and watch it twice. [Jalopnik]

Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - Chrome Wrapped Lamborghini Gallardo Damaged in Michigan - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

For whatever reason, supercars seem to be involved in all too many crashes. In reality though, they’re probably involved in crashes proportionality to the numbers of them sold and they are just reported more for understandable reasons. The following Lamborghini Gallardo is one of the most interesting in recent times due to the unique look of this particular example.

The following fender bender happened in Michigan with the driver reportedly a Michigan State University female student. It is hard to say just what happened, but it seems apparent that either the bright orange Jeep Wrangler reversed into the chrome wrapped Gallardo or the Italian supercar rear-ended the Jeep while travelling quite slowly.

Either way, the repair bill will be quite expensive with the front bumper, driver’s side quarter panel and hood all needing to be replaced.

Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - Photo Of The Day: Grey LaFerrari at Spa Francorchamps - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

Ferrari LaFerrari

We’ve already brought you an intoxicating video of a silver LaFerrari hitting Spa Francorchamps as well as coverage from the Ferrari Owner’s Day gathering, and now we’re featuring a stunning LaFerrari shot as our latest Photo Of The Day inclusion!

Snapped at the circuit’s final chicane, the LaFerrari looks totally poised and settled through the tricky corner. One of the most eye-catching elements of this photo is that it perfectly shows just how truly massive the yellow brake calipers of the LaFerrari are!

In case you didn’t know, the LaFerrari gets a 6.3 liter V12 which is connected to an electric motor similar to the system on the McLaren P1. The Ferrari F150 V12 has an output of 789 hp at 9000 rpm and 700 Nm at 7000 rpm while its electric motor has a maximum output of 161 hp and 270 Nm of torque. That delivers a total combined power output of 950 hp, allowing the new Ferrari Enzo to do 0-100 km/h in less than 3 seconds, 0-300 km/h in 15 seconds and a top speed in excess of 350 km/h.

Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - Ferrari 550 Barchetta Sets Off In a Spin, Crash Follows! - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

550crash 600x330 at Ferrari 550 Barchetta Sets Off In a Spin, Crash Follows!

Everybody knows that keeping fast cars in check at high speed is a tall order and that a small error, or lack of skill, on the part of the drive can lead to disaster. What a lot of people overlook, though, is that powerful cars are also tricky to get off the line; a fact that the owner of this Ferrari 550 Barchetta found out the hard way.

This is especially tricky with manual cars. Too little gas and you stall, too much gas and you spin out of control. The Ferrari driver here falls victim to the latter. Still, he was pretty lucky that it ended up in a mild fender bender.
He was also lucky that his Ferrari 550 Barchetta cut that old cheap wagon somewhere nice and soft – in the hip! Damages to the parked vehicle have reportedly been taken care of satisfactorily.

Vintage and Exotic Car Restoration Livermore - FERRARI 250 GT TOUR DE FRANCE: DRIVEN - FZ Restoration - 925-294-5666

In the closing stages of last year's Mille Miglia I followed the most beautiful 250MM at speed, in fading light. Its slim hips and four weeny exhaust tips wouldn't have appealed to me before that convoy, but 100 miles of ludicrous speed altered my feelings towards these long-distance specials. They have something of the Bonneville speed specials about them: low drag and low slung.

Even by 50s Ferrari standards it's a stunner
Even by 50s Ferrari standards it's a stunner

And now I'm standing behind another narrow rump, a similar shape, with the four distinctive cigar diameter exhausts, and this one might be even prettier than the MM. My knowledge of these older Ferraris isn't too bad, but when Max Girado of RM auctions dropped me a line asking if I wanted a little pootle in a 250 Tour de France that was going to feature at the London auction on September 8, I thought I knew what it would look like. Largely because a car of the same description overtook me several times in the Fordwater Trophy at Goodwood last year, driven by one M Girado!

Same but different
But this car looks nothing like that one - and while I'm walking around this simply stunning machine - to my eyes more beautiful than the car I thought it was going to be - Max saunters in and casually gives me the layman's guide to the three different versions of the 250 TdF. You'd like Max, he really knows his stuff and, for a bloke who marshals auctions at which cars are increasingly a form of stationary currency, he likes them when they're driven. Preferably with him at the wheel.

Lots of cylinders, lots of carbs, lots of grinning
Lots of cylinders, lots of carbs, lots of grinning

So what is this 250 TdF? It's the first run of cars that were really just called 250 GT Berlinettas, but inherited the TdF soubriquet because of their success on the French endurance event. This is the eighth of nine chassis built in 1956 and a week later my lower jaw has yet to fully return to its correct position. In the flesh this car has a hypnotic effect on me - the styling is as unusual as the baby blue paintwork. It has the air of some special sculpted by an Italian coachworker, maybe a hint of Zagato.

We huddle around the TdF and coo at the details for way, way too long - then decide to head off for a drive. I don't think I've driven a £5m Ferrari on the road before.
There so much stationary theatre about this car, simply climbing onboard, instinctively allowing the palms of your hands to brush around the delicate wooden steering wheel rim and then grabbing a fist full of that tall chrome gear lever. The key sits high on the dashboard with a far neater solution than all those modern non-keys: you pop it into the barrel and simply push it in. With a small amount of throttle, the 3.0-litre V12 fires easily, then you push the clutch, engage first gear and roll forwards - noting the perfectly Italian driving position. I can just about reach the wheel, but my contorted knees foul the wheel. And I'm not a tall man.

Quirky assymetric seating all about the driver
Quirky assymetric seating all about the driver

Monkey business
The controls are heavy and deliberate at low speed - this is clearly a car that wants to be up around 100mph, flowing down Route Nationales, switching between third and fourth gears. The ride is firm and steering is slow enough to warrant serious shoulder exercise. The view forwards is just magnificent too - surely these 50s Ferraris have the most beautiful clock faces of all time? That mechanical rev counter needle hunts around and you can't quite believe that a V12 of this vintage really revs to 7,000rpm. Max, riding shotgun, confirms that "six should do for today."
If you could justify the value of a car by the way people respond to it, the TdF is probably worth twice the estimate. People don't just smile, they point, shriek, wave, fling their arms about and then flutter around it. Truly, it's one of the prettiest cars I've ever seen, let alone driven. One notable quirk is the asymmetrical seating designs - a low-back bucket for the driver, high-back conventional seat, plus headrest, for the passenger.
But popularity isn't the key to value in the world of old cars - access is, and this car really does offer a passport to every event. It is eligible for the Mille Miglia, the Le Mans Classic, Goodwood - pretty much every notable race meeting and endurance classic would want this car on its entry list. There are not many machines that qualify for such access.

Well it's not red, for starters
VIP pass
We wobble around rural Surrey for a bit, shoot a few video clips in that most British of setting, Tilford cricket pitch, grab a snack in the Barley Mow and then head back to base. I'm getting more confident with the gearchange and the concept that it's a car which only really comes alive when you're pushing it - because it takes that effort to reveal the car's sense of connection. It feels nippy today, so in 1956, on a damp road in the middle of a French night, it must have felt like an uncontrollable missile.
