It's a wonder that Ferrari feels it has ever needed to
promote anything. Between all the crappy perfume and silly hats that people
actually pay them for, half of the worst sort of automotive enthusiasts and all
of the tifosi are promoting the company anyways.
But back in 1987, Ferrari felt it necessary to promote the
F40, at least in Japan. And it's a wonder they felt the need to do that, too,
considering that the Ferrari F40 is widely hailed as one of the greatest
supercars of all time, and Ferrari basically went nuts trying to make as many
as they could to satisfy wild speculative demand.
And so, they made this little promo video. The entire thing
is delightfully 1980s kitsch, especially the first three minutes which are just
filled with the most radical synth tracks this side of The Final Countdown, and
the strange, disembodied face of Enzo Ferrari, speaking from what must be
purgatory.1
There's also a pretty sweet burnout, because what is a promo
video without one, and some shots of F40s actually being built on the assembly
line.
It's really fascinating, and, for a promo video made in 1987
by Japanese magazine Car Graphic, actually not too bad. Though I would've
enjoyed it more if it had a bit more Best Motoring to
it.
